Design for Manufacturability (DFM)
CipherFab's Design for Manufacturability review is included on every uploaded file — automatically and at no additional cost. Every CAD file uploaded to the CipherFab platform is analysed before production begins, flagging geometry issues, tolerance violations, and manufacturability concerns that would cause quality problems, cost increases, or lead time delays after the order is placed.
What is Design for Manufacturability?
CipherFab's Design for Manufacturability (DFM) review is included on every uploaded file — automatically, at no additional cost, before a single component is manufactured. DFM is not a separate service you request. It is built into the CipherFab platform as a default step on every order, ensuring that geometry issues, tolerance violations, and manufacturability concerns are caught at the point of quote — not after production has begun.
Our DFM review combines automated geometry analysis with expert engineering review from our in-house manufacturing engineering team. Every file uploaded to CipherFab is reviewed against the specific process it is being quoted for — so the DFM check for a CNC machined component is different from the DFM check for a sheet metal fabrication or an injection moulded housing.

How the DFM Review Process Works
| Stage | What Happens |
|---|---|
| 1. File upload | Customer uploads STEP, IGES, STL, or native CAD file to the CipherFab platform. |
| 2. Automated geometry analysis | Platform analyses wall thickness, feature sizes, hole diameters, undercuts, and draft angles against the selected process and material. |
| 3. DFM flag generation | Any features that fall outside the process capability are flagged with a specific description and recommended resolution. |
| 4. Engineering review | CipherFab's manufacturing engineering team reviews flagged items — confirming, adjusting, or adding context where automated analysis requires human judgment. |
| 5. DFM report issued | Customer receives DFM report alongside their quote — before they confirm the order. |
| 6. Design correction (if needed) | Customer updates the file and re-uploads — DFM review repeats at no charge. |
| 7. Order confirmed | Production begins only after DFM is clear — protecting the customer's lead time and tooling investment. |
DFM Checks by Manufacturing Process
| Manufacturing Process | DFM Checks Included |
|---|---|
| CNC Machining | Minimum wall thickness · Deep pocket depth-to-width ratio · Thin wall features · Undercut accessibility · Thread depth and tap drill compatibility · Sharp internal corners · Tolerance achievability |
| Sheet Metal Fabrication | Minimum bend radius · Hole-to-edge distance · Hole-to-bend distance · Tab and slot geometry · Weld accessibility · Material grain direction |
| 3D Printing | Minimum wall thickness · Overhang angles · Support structure requirements · Feature resolution limits · Part orientation recommendations |
| Injection Moulding | Draft angles · Wall thickness uniformity · Undercut and side-action requirements · Gate and runner placement · Rib and boss design · Sink mark risk |
| Tube Fabrication | Minimum bend radius · Wall thinning at bends · Hole placement relative to bends · End forming compatibility · Weld joint accessibility |
Why DFM Matters
DFM feedback helps identify geometry, tolerance, and material issues before production begins, reducing costly rework, scrap, and production delays.
CipherFAB provides DFM analysis at the point of quote — improving design quality before a single part is manufactured.
